September 10, 2001 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — American Muslim leaders said a raid Wednesday on a Texas Internet business was part of an
r
“anti-Muslim witch hunt” promoted by a pro-Israel
r
lobby in America. Early yesterday morning, more than
r
80 agents from the FBI, INS, Customs Service, and
r
other federal agencies raided the offices of InfoCom
r
Corporation in Richardson, Texas.
r
r
In a statement released at a news conference outside
r
Infocom’s headquarters, the Muslim groups said:
r
r
“American Muslims view yesterday’s action as just one
r
of a long list of attempts by the pro-Israel lobby to
r
intimidate and silence all those who wish to see
r
Palestinian Muslims and Christians free themselves of
r
a brutal Apartheid-like occupation. We believe the
r
genesis of this raid lies not in Washington, but in
r
Tel Aviv.
r
r
“Hundreds of innocent American businesses and citizens
r
are being harmed by the government’s actions. This
r
incident can only serve to marginalize millions of
r
American Muslims who are committed to the betterment
r
of our diverse society.
r
r
Groups represented at the news conference included
r
American Muslim Council, American Muslims for
r
Jerusalem, American Muslim Alliance, Council on
r
American-Islamic Relations, Islamic Society of North
r
America, Islamic Circle of North America, Islamic
r
Association for Palestine, Muslim Alliance in North
r
America, Muslim Public Affairs Council, and Muslim
r
Student Association of US and Canada.
r
r
However, the FBI later denied these allegations,
r
saying the nature of the raid was due to criminal
r
activity.
r
r
Infocom hosts web sites for some 500 companies
r
worldwide, and many of them are media companies based
r
in Qatar.
r
r
One of Infocom’s clients whose web site was shut down
r
by the raid is Qatar-based Al-Jazeera satellite
r
television network. Al-Jazeera, a popular and
r
respected Arabic news outlet, has frequently been
r
criticized by Israel for its reporting on that state’s
r
brutal policies in the Occupied Territories.
r
r
The raid came just weeks after a Wall Street Journal
r
column by Steven Emerson and Daniel Pipes that called
r
for just such an action by the government. They wrote:
r
“. . . the federal authorities should use the tools it
r
already has for closing down these Web sites and
r
organizations.”
