Rackspace to Lease VA Facility Space

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Managed hosting provider Rackspace Hosting (www.rackspace.com) announced on Wednesday that it will be operating a new data center in Ashburn, Virginia where it will lease 11,000 square feet of raised floor space from a subsidiary of DuPont Fabros Technology (www.dft.com).

DuPont is a real estate investment firm that has a large portfolio of wholesale data centers in the United States.

In October, DuPont’s parent company, DuPont Fabros Technology, said it would postpone a $270 million data center in Santa Clara after its inability to attain enough capital to finance the project.

Rackspace says the new facility, which is expected to come online this July, will be able to meet the demands of its continued growth as well as offer additional geographic redundancy to its new and existing customers.

The long-term lease will see Rackspace use the raised floor square footage and available power from DuPont Fabros.

The Ashburn facility optimizes operating efficiency through an enhanced power capacity and flexible design with N+2 redundancy on all major systems including heat rejection systems, generators and UPS systems.

The Northern Virginia area has seen significant demand in data center space. NTT America announced in October it is building its second data center in the region, while Terremark Worldwide announced this week it will delay the building of a data center in Santa Clara, California, to focus on expanding its data center, the NAP of the Capital Region.

“DuPont Fabros offers some of the leading data center facilities in the country with world-class operational and management practices,” says Randy Smith, director of real estate at Rackspace Hosting. “We chose to work with them for their unique ability to design a data center infrastructure that increases operational efficiencies and ultimate reliability for our customers. By leaving the infrastructure management to DuPont Fabros, we can be much more flexible and redeploy some resources so we can focus on continually delivering our customers Fanatical Support.”
