August 25, 2003 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Rackspace Managed Hosting (rackspace.com) today launched PrevenTier, a three-tiered security system designed to help identify and mitigate the effects of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. According to Rackspace, the new security system combines its proprietary technology with solutions from Arbor Networks (arbornetworks.com) and Riverhead Networks (riverheadnetworks) to detect and remove malicious traffic while leaving legitimate traffic to flow unimpeded.

Level one of PrevenTier involves monitoring all traffic that enters the network with Rackspace’s proprietary intrusion detection technology. At level two, Arbor Network’s Peakflow DDoS solution searches for anomalies on a network-wide basis. And the third level involves the re-routing of suspect traffic through the mitigation engine, the Riverhead Guard, if malicious activity is detected.

“During the past 12 months, while beta testing the product, Rackspace has had over 95 percent success in blocking DDoS attacks while allowing legitimate traffic to reach the protected server,” said Paul Froutan, vice president of engineering at Rackspace Managed Hosting. “PrevenTier is a critical component to our comprehensive security offering, enabling Rackspace to deliver maximum uptime to our customers’ business critical applications.”
