The agreement, announced on Wednesday, extends the market reach of the Solaris platform and helps Sun and Rackable Systems expand their integrated offerings, the companies said. Sun’s Solaris platform will be able to run on Rackable systems based on AMD, Intel and Xeon processors.

“In addition to offering Solaris for x86 systems as an enterprise-class operating system choice to our customers, we will now be able to go one step further and offer hardware configuration certification,” said Tom Barton, president and CEO of Rackable Systems. “Customers will now benefit from fully-integrated Sun software and management tools, as well as the solid Solaris product life cycle that guarantees release-to-release binary compatibility.”

Sun said the agreement will help it extend Solaris into key vertical markets where Rackable Systems has a strong base of customers.
