July 28, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — IBM (ibm.com) announced on Monday it has signed an agreement that will allow data center products provider Rackable (rackable.com) to offer IBM’s BladeCenter servers inside its ICE Cube modular data centers.
Blades from IBM greatly differ from Rackable’s rack-mounted system because IBM blades are used for more general computing, while Rackable are designed for more dense computing projects.
Additionally, Rackable’s systems are based on Intel and AMD chips, while IBM blades also give the option of IBM’s POWER5 and POWER6 processors.
ICE Cube data centers are transportable, modular data centers designed to be deployed in disaster recovery scenarios, miliary operations or data center expansions and can be located in hostile climatic and environmental situations.
Rackable will be using IBM’s BladeCenter T or HT systems in its installations. Since they are NEBS-3/ETSI-compliant, they are certified for use in telecommunications environments and carrier facilities.
The ICE Cube is available in 20- or 40-foot container sizes. BladeCenter-specific configurations of ICE Cube will enable Rackable Systems’ enterprise customers to reach densities up to 1,344 dual socket, Quad core Intel Xeon blades, or 672 quad socket, dual core AMD Opteron blades.
In April, Rackable Systems signed a deal with Japanese IT solutions provider ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corporation to integrate Rackable Systems’ Eco-Logical line of servers into its data center offerings.
