Windows Servers Gaining, Rackspace Says
Verio Attracts Resellers with Free Month of VPS Hosting: Companies looking to boost revenues are finding Verio's Free VPS promotion the right fit for getting started as Hosting Reseller.
August 29, 2005 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- A recent survey by Rackspace Managed Hosting (rackspace.com) found that the decision to run on Windows platforms is more a function of the availability of applications than security or cost considerations, reports say.
According to Rackspace, 60 percent of its Windows users and 92 percent of its Linux users agreed that Windows is less secure. Meanwhile, 50 percent of Windows users found Windows to have a lower total cost of ownership and 77 percent of Linux users said Linux was cheaper.
Despite many of the misgivings expressed through the survey among both Windows and Linux users, Rackspace says Windows is the fastest growing segment of services under its management. And the company's survey data suggests that availability of more Windows-based applications, even with the growth of Linux-based applications, is one of the main reasons why.
The Rackspace survey polled 1,978 of the company's largest US-based customers. Just under 60 percent of the respondents ran Linux on the systems with the others running Microsoft. Rackspace manages in excess of 13,000 servers.
