Qwest Names New Chairman and CEO

August 17, 2007 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider Qwest Communications International (qwest.com) recently announced that Edward A. Mueller has been named chairman and chief executive officer. He will be succeeding Richard C. Notebaert, who earned the reputation of steering the company back from the brink of bankruptcy.

According to reports, Mueller will take over at a time when Qwest is struggling to expand revenues in the face of the continuing decline in traditional voice revenues and growing competition from cable TV network operators.

Mueller most recently led Williams-Sonoma, which he joined as CEO in January 2003 and served until July 2006. Prior, Mueller served as president and CEO of Ameritech Corporation, a subsidiary of SBC Communications and as president of Pacific Bell from 1997 to 1999.

According to industry analysts, Mueller will earn a starting salary of $1.2 million, plus stock-based incentives, and a bonus of at least $947,000 and his appointment may be a sign that the company is looking for a merger or buyout to strengthen its position in the telecoms market.

Notebaert announced his retirement in June.
