Q&A: Jim Ciampaglio, COO, NeoSpire

NeoSpire COO Jim Ciampaglio

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — With its high level of customization and functionality, open source content management system Drupal (www.drupal.org) has quickly become one of the most popular website creation and management tools available.

Drupal hosting allows users to generate a website composed of a several ready to go, customizable, functional and extensible modules.

Hosting provider NeoSpire (www.neospire.com) has embraced this open source tool, offering Drupal hosting services designed from the ground up to meet the needs of enterprises.

The company says its configurations have been “battle-tested on the highest-profile Drupal deployments,” providing businesses with a truly scalable and customizable hosting solution.

In an email interview with the WHIR, NeoSpire COO Jim Ciampaglio discusses the benefits of open source hosting and how NeoSpire’s own experience in working with Drupal to create some dynamic websites.

WHIR: What are some of the benefits of open source technologies?

Jim Ciampaglio: Open source technologies, no matter what they are, serve a specific purpose and there are going to be situations where they are the right tool for a project just the same as there are situations where closed-source technology is appropriate. Some of the most obvious benefits are the lack of license fees and the flexibility open source can offer, but again, it all depends on what the need is and whether open source is the right tool for the job.

WHIR: Are there any security issues associated with hosting open source technology?

JC: I don’t think that there are any inherent security issues with hosting open source technologies that are vastly different than security for closed-source technologies. All software, whether open or closed source, is going to have vulnerabilities that we as a hosting company need to address and patch. In one sense, open source technologies can be quicker to respond to these vulnerabilities because they’re not beholden to a specific vendor’s patch releases.

WHIR: Is it more expensive to host a page using Drupal CMS than a more traditional hosting solution?

JC: Depends on how you measure your expenses. You won’t have licensing costs using Drupal, but if you don’t have the requisite expertise to host and maintain a Drupal site you could run into unforeseen issues and downtime, which could become very expensive for your reputation or revenues. That’s where NeoSpire comes in; we help these types of hosting environments perform beautifully and remain available 24/7. We have expert Drupal admins on staff who possess a ton of real world experience implementing and managing enterprise-class Drupal environments.

WHIR: Is hosting open source technology a niche? Is Drupal advancing that cause?

JC: Open source passed niche status long ago and continues to thrive. Drupal in particular has a firmly entrenched reputation as an enterprise content management system, and will only continue to expand its reach in the market. We already have seen a steady increase in Drupal interest, and have every expectation the trend will continue to grow.

WHIR: What kinds of websites has NeoSpire worked with Drupal to host?

JC: NeoSpire has realized tremendous interest in Drupal over the past 12 months. We have seen interest in some key verticals, such as education and entertainment, jump on the Drupal movement and we have had success with many worldwide brands adapting Drupal as their platform of choice.
