Dave Meizlik, VP of marketing and business development at Dome9
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — This week, cloud server security provider Dome9 Security (www.dome9.com) announced the general availability of its new multi-platform security management service that automates cloud server security for both enterprises and cloud hosting providers.
After offering the service via a beta program for several months, Dome9 is now launching with the introduction of two service plans. Along with the new service plans, Dome9 is offering new capabilities to deliver scalable security management for private and public clouds across all server operating systems and service providers.
With security built into every hosted and cloud server, Dome9 automates and centralizes cloud server security across web hosting and cloud providers with dynamic policy controls to automate security.
At the core of Dome9 is its Secure Access Lease technology, which provides dynamically-generated, time-based secure access to cloud servers that automates security policy to prevent users from malicious attacks.
In an email interview, Dave Meizlik, Dome9 vice president of marketing and business development discussed security within the cloud, the new multi-platform cloud security service, and the company’s recent partnerships with hosting and cloud providers to offer the new security management service.
WHIR: Who is this new cloud security service intended for and how will they benefit from it?
Dave Meizlik: Dome9 is a first-of-its kind cloud server security management service. Available for the enterprise as well as hosting and cloud providers, Dome9 provides dynamic security policy control for clouds, VPS, dedicated servers, and Amazon’s EC2 Security Groups, across all major operating systems and service providers. No one would leave their car unlocked in a public parking lot, and yet many of today’s 20 million cloud and virtual private servers are left unlocked in the cloud and vulnerable to attack. Administrators leave servers open so they can connect to and manage these machines, creating massive holes for hackers and malware like the recent Morto Worm to exploit. Dome9 closes these holes, securing the administrative ports such as SSH and RDP, which are otherwise left open by cloud administrators. Dome9 centrally manages security for all servers and clouds.
WHIR: Can you discuss some of the capabilities of Dome9′s new cloud security management services?
DM: Dome9 centrally manages security for all servers and clouds, offering 1-click secure access to servers, automated controls, and rich auditing to see and manage who’s connecting to what cloud and virtual private servers. Its key innovation is the ability to provide secure access leasing – dynamically generated, time-based secure access to cloud servers, which enables customers to close all server administrative ports by default and provide secure access only for who, what, when, and how long it’s needed.
Dome9 is premiering several new capabilities, including multi-tier administration which offers several tiers of administration with configurable levels of control for delegated administrators. With multi-tier administration, super-users can have full control over all cloud servers, while delegated administrators may be granted partial or limited access to a predefined set of machines. The Dome9 agent now supports CentOS 6.0 and Ubuntu, covering all major versions of Linux and Windows operating systems, including CentOS/RHEL 5.x and 6.0, Debian 6, and Windows 2008 R2, 2008, 2003 R2 and 2003. Dome9 auditing provides full, account-level visibility and logging of user activity. Advanced filters let administrators drill down to see when users have logged on to Dome9 Central, changed security policies, sent secure access invitations, and accessed cloud machines. Finally, customers using Dome9 commercially can now enjoy metered, pay-as-you-go billing, so they pay only for what they use. This model lets customers pay for the protection they use with a security and billing format that is as elastic as their cloud infrastructure.
WHIR: Is Dome9′s cloud server infrastructure built in-house, or is it based on a third-party provider?
DM: Dome9 has built a robust and infinitely scalable cloud server security management platform delivered in and for the cloud. Dome9’s proprietary service integrates with servers and host and cloud infrastructures via either an agent or API-based approach.
WHIR: Can you discuss the development of Dome9’s security service and its beta program?
DM: Dome9 was founded in late 2010, and came out of stealth mode in May of 2011 when it opened its beta program (which includes more than 100 participants, globally) and announced Series-A funding. Beta and preview customers tout Dome9’s Secure Access Lease technology – automated access provisioning that ensures administrative ports are open only when, for whom, and as long as is needed, as well as Dome9’s consolidation of hosted and cloud security management (i.e., one management service for all servers and clouds) as among its most unique and beneficial features.
WHIR: What hosting providers has Dome9 partnered with to integrate this new service into their plans?
DM: Dome9 has announced partnerships with some of the leading cloud and security providers, including Amazon Web Services, CloudFlare, and GoGrid, with many more partnerships in development.
