(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — It seems like almost every day a new cloud infrastructure services startup pops up that’s more or less identically to the previous one.
Cloud hosting provider NephoScale (www.nephoscale.com) hopes to tackle the daunting task of changing the way users develop and deliver software in the cloud with new infrastructure services that will allow companies to rapidly deliver applications with greater scalability.
NephoScale’s flagship infrastructure as a service offerings include cloud servers, on-demand dedicated servers and object-based cloud storage.
The focal point of these services is NephoScale’s programmatic interface called CloudScript, which allows users to ultimately provision and manage all aspects of their cloud infrastructure using a single API submission.
As a result, users able to fully scale horizontally, vertically, and geographically, simplifying complex computing environments.
In a phone interview, NephoScale president and co-founder Bruce Templeton, who is also the CEO of Silcon Valley Web Hosting discusses the newly launched company and its unique approach to the traditional cloud service model.
the WHIR: How does NephoScale’s hybrid cloud hosting solution differ from those offered by other cloud companies?
Bruce Templeton: We’re taking a new approach to IaaS by making it so simple for developers to autonomously set up a cloud infrastructure, that it removes the system administrator from the equation, which means companies can do even more with less. The technology we’ve built into our architecture also helps us fulfill a real industry demand by supporting PaaS functions, such as configuring and optimizing an application stack, while providing the additional services and flexibility associated with an IaaS.
WHIR: What kind of benefits does CloudScript provide?
BT: We do it ourselves and we’ve created a platform where you can do it yourself too, meaning advanced software development to shorten the time to market. Changing the way software is developed and delivered is a big part of what cloud is trying to change. But we also try to limit ourselves as far as being a software development house, so over time we have the opportunity to show people we can do that. CloudScript is putting a level of infrastructure control into developers’ hands that they haven’t seen before. Imagine you’re a developer deploying 10 web servers with storage, firewalls and load balancers. Instead of doing individual API requests for each one, you can now do one API submission and call it done. You can begin to see how this can seriously impact efficiency and delivery times.
WHIR: When did you first launch the beta program?
BT: We first began offering the service in Beta format about eight months ago. We had about 100 users on it and it went very, very well. We were pleasantly surprised. We’re hoping to turn them into clients.
WHIR: Will you continue to run your other company, Silicon Valley Web Hosting, as a separate brand, or do you have plans to integrate the two?
BT: I wouldn’t doubt if we just decide to let Silicon Valley Web Hosting to go away as a brand in a couple years because we’ll be able to roll most of the dedicated services.
WHIR: What are some of the industry hurdles NephoScale is faced with in succeeding in such a saturated market?
BT: We’re transforming our culture, the type of people that are working for us. It’s a big transformation and we really wanted to show people out of the gate that we’re not a hosting company-turned-cloud, but we’re a software cloud enablement company. Also, so many competitors are pretty slow about getting features out due to a lot of internal issues of how they’re internal systems are built. Rackspace will take a couple years, GoGrid will be about three or four, and we’re going to be rolling out stuff almost every two weeks. We’re really hoping to show people we can rapidly produce features and improvements that are also tested. That’s the challenge. We’re really becoming part software company.
