November 9, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The PW Registry Corporation (pwregistry.pw), public trustee of the .pw top-level domain, said on Tuesday that it is auctioning sponsorship rights for nearly 50,000 second-level .pw domains.

The .pw domain, unveiled earlier this year, is devoted to “communities of shared interests.” Domains selected for the auction represent communities of thousands and even millions of people. The list includes popular surnames and first names, countries, cities and states, destination sites and short letter strings.

PW Registry said sponsorship of a second-level domain is not the equivalent of an official domain name registration. Instead, it grants the exclusive right to market a PW second-level domain. Sponsors are paid a commission on each sale of a sponsored second-level .pw domain, such as .smith.pw.

“With an inventory of 100 percent of the world’s surnames, towns, schools and hobbies, the PW sponsorship program represents an ideal home-based business with no technical programming required,” says Tom Barrett, president of PW Registry. “And with the availability of 100 percent of the world’s school and sport team’s mascots, a PW sponsorship can help build fan loyalty and raise money for worthy causes. The only start-up cost is the initial license fee.”
