(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — On-demand business management technology developer Apptio (www.apptio.com) has announced new capabilities that track the cost, quality and utilization of private cloud infrastructures.
According to Apptio’s Wednesday announcement coinciding with the VMworld 2010 summit, its new Private Cloud Business Management solution integrates with VMware and other IT systems to provide insight into the real costs and performance of cloud-based enterprise IT systems.
“Apptio ensures customers have the tools to manage the entire IT supply chain including traditional IT, private clouds and external clouds,” Apptio products vice president Michel Feaster said in a statement. “We’re providing customers with a complete solution to manage the business value of private clouds. IT leaders now have the power and knowledge to deliver accurate costing of private cloud services and determine when it makes sense to migrate more services to the cloud.”
Companies are beginning to invest beyond traditional infrastructure, and adopt private clouds, however, IT organizations must be able to chargeback business units for cloud services based on consumption in order for this delivery model to work. To this end, Apptio integrates with VMware and other IT systems to incorporate all contributing costs such as virtual and physical servers, labor, facilities, software and other infrastructure based on the consumption of resources to provide an accurate private cloud service total cost of ownership.
Apptio’s Private Cloud Business Management solution collects data from sources including VMware vSphere, and VMware vCenter Chargeback to provide the total cost of private cloud services.
Using this data, managers can not only drive chargeback processes, but they can also quantify return on investment and return on assets, as well as have access to service quality and resource utilization metrics, demand management, and capacity planning.
With research firm Gartner anticipating for IT organizations’ private cloud spending to surpass their budget spent on public cloud services by 2012, the need for solutions like Apptio will be critical in the coming months and years.
