(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center optimization firm Power Assure Inc. (www.powerassure.com) announced Monday it has received a $1.5 million investment from the global power and automation group ABB (www.abb.com).
ABB’s venture capital arm, ABB Technology Ventures, joins Good Energies, Point Judith Capital, Draper Fisher Jurvetson and the Department of Energy as investors in the Santa Clara, California company.
Power Assure has raised $20.25 million in funding up to this point, including $5 million from the Department of Energy.
“By adding ABB to our investment syndicate we are partnering with one of the world’s leading producers of automation software as well as data center power equipment,” says Brad Wurtz, Power Assure’s president and CEO, quoted in the company’s press release. “ABB’s engineering expertise and global customer base will help us bring our technology to the world’s largest data centers, no matter where they are based.”
Power Assure also launched its Dynamic Power Optimization software on Monday which reduces energy consumption in corporate data centers from 50 to 60 percent.
The application manages power usage based on the computing load. If computing demand is slow, the system will lower power consumption of servers, according to Power Assure’s founder and chief technology officer Clemens Pfeiffer. The energy reduction is monitored so service level agreements are still met.
“Our latest product developments represent a significant step forward for the industry and further address our customers’ growing requirements for more efficient management of their data center operations,” said Brad Wurtz, president and CEO of Power Assure. “Now companies can automatically balance compute infrastructure with actual demand and determine the optimal capacity required for a given IT load and dynamically adjust server availability in real time along with required cooling and facility resources.”
As part of its efforts at reducing carbon emissions, NASA is deploying Power Assure’s Dynamic Power Management software in its 75 data centers.
The software aggregates data from existing interfaces such as power distribution units into a series of reports and dashboards used to monitor power consumption across the agency.
“NASA’s commitment to innovation continues to drive our adoption of new technologies throughout our organization,” says Chris Kemp, chief technology officer for IT NASA. “With efficiency initiatives at the forefront of public interest, it is especially relevant to highlight developments that are bringing about leading-edge power and energy management savings. Our use of Power Assure software in major sites within numerous data centers across the country is part of our ongoing effort to lead in data center optimization.”
