Plans for .XXX Domain Rejected
May 11, 2006 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Internet regulators have rejected plans to create an exclusive .xxx domain for adult-related Web sites, which advocates said would make it easier for Web users to locate – or avoid – pornography online.
Conservative opponents of the plan argued that it would legitimize pornography, while opponents in the porn industry feel that it could lead to more state control. Paul Twomey, head of Internet regulator ICANN (icann.org) said the decision was not political.
The idea for an .xxx domain first emerged in 2001. A final approval on the domain has been delayed several times – most recently in December – following last August’s request from the US Department of Commerce to postpone the plan due to its “concerns” about the domain. The plan has been attacked by many, including former ICANN board member Karl Auerbach and US conservative religious groups like the Family Research Council.
ICM Registry (icmregistry.com), the company that proposed and plans to run the .xxx, says the domain would have simplified finding and filtering pornographic material online, but critics believe that there was no guarantee pornographers would migrate material to the new domain because registering for the .xxx would be voluntary.
