(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The Pirate Party of Canada (www.pirateparty.ca) is hoping be the first Canadian political group to host a mirror website of WikiLeaks, according to a report by IT Business.
The organization would become one of the many Pirate Parties around the world that are currently supporting WikiLeaks and hosting mirrors.
As of Thursday, there are nearly 3,000 WikiLeaks mirror websites, according to the WikiLeaks mirror site page.
The whistle-blower’s original domain, WikiLeaks.org, is currently being hosted by Silicon Valley Web Hosting after being shut down by its previous provider Amazon EC2 three weeks ago.
PPCA leader Mikkel Paulson called the move “more symbolic than anything”. The decision to host the site was recently voted on by Canadian members of the party.
Paulson added that the group was “being cautious” and has already consulted with Elections Canada to ensure that “it’s allowable under the Elections Act.”
Though Elections Canada has not yet commented on the matter, it did confirm that if an election campaign is not currently being held it has no say on how a political party uses its funds.
Elections Canada added that parties only need to file an annual return that is posted publicly to Elections Canada’s website.
If given permission to host the WikiLeaks mirror, Canadian DNS provider EasyDNS Technologies has volunteerd to provide the DNS services.
A couple weeks ago, many major media outlets published reports mistaking the company for EveryDNS, the DNS provider that had cut off WikiLeaks’ services.
EasyDNS was later asked by groups affiliated by WikiLeaks to provide DNS services to mirror sites, WikiLeaks.ch and WikiLeaks.nl, which the company is now hosting.
