PIR Implements .org Domain Grace Period

June 10, 2003 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The Public Interest Registry (PIR.org) announced yesterday the successful implementation of a Redemption Grace Period (RGP) service that gives .org domain holders an additional 30 days to recover their domain name if it is deleted inadvertently.

Deletion of domain names can occur if they are not renewed by their due date. The RGP safeguard is designed to prevent .org name holders from accidentally losing their domain names in the event this occurs.

According to reports, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has recommended that registries implement this service to allow the original registrants to redeem a deleted name through their original registrar.

The .org domain is the Internet?s third largest ?generic? or non-country specific top-level domain. It is typically associated with non-commercial activities.

Based in Reston, Virgiania, The Public Interest Registry is a non-profit corporation created by the Internet Society to manage the .ORG domain.
