November 11, 2005 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Public Information Registry (pir.org) said on Monday that it was not at fault for a recent incident between itself and AITdomains’s (aitdomains.com) registrar system, which resulted in a large number of .org domains being deleted and placed in redemption.
PIR is the operator of the .org registry. AITdomains is the domain name division of Web hosting provider AIT (ait.com).
David Maher, senior vice president of law and policy for Public Information Registry, said the “unfortunate incident” stemmed from a malfunction at AIT. “We have firm evidence the delete commands came from AIT,” says Maher.
Maher says the deleted domains, estimated to number around 500, are back online after being down for approximately four days.
Maher said the two companies have agreed to work together and are willing to enter neutral arbitration if necessary.
AIT said last week that it had begun an investigation of the incident in conjunction with ICANN.
