Earlier this year, MarkMonitor released its annual report, “MarkMonitor Brandjacking Index: 2008 – The Year in Review” which showed that online abuse increased significantly among leading brands last year.

With 151,000 unique attacks reported in Q2 2009, phishing attacks were at their highest in two years.

Brands in the financial and payment services sectors were once again the top target for phishing with 80 percent of the total attacks reported in Q2 2009.

Meanwhile, attacks targeting the login credentials of social networking sites saw a 168 percent increase between Q2 2008 and Q2 2009.

Last week, members of the popular microblogging site Twitter experienced phishing attacks via direct messages, which tricked them into entering login credentials via a page that resembles Twitter login page.

MarkMonitor also discovered in analyzing millions of URLs that there was a change in phishing techniques used.

The study showed an average of 351 attacks per organization in Q2 2009.

Additionally, the study revealed that 50 percent of the sites associated with phishing attacks during Q2 2009 were hosted in the United States.
