PG&E Expands Energy-Savings Rebates

July 28, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — California utility Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (pge.com) has now added storage virtualization and thin provisioning to its list of energy-saving technologies that qualify for customer rebates, along with server virtualization and wide range of idle drives, as reported on InfoWorld.

The news follows storage vendor and thin provisioning pioneer 3PAR recent announcement for its Virtual Technology Incentive Program.

PG&E’s energy-savings rebates apply to most of the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley, which are home to many technology companies and data centers that greatly need to reduce energy consumption. As incentive, the utility offers as much as 70 percent of the cost for companies that meet program requirements.

Earlier this year, data center operator 365 Main joined PG&E’s Critical Peak Pricing voluntary program designed to reduce energy load during the summer to avoid the chance of an energy emergency in return for seasonal discounts.

Thin provisioning enables users to allocate all of their various storage resources in order to provide sufficient space for servers on a demand basis. When combined with storage virtualization, it enables organizations to more effectively manage storage as well as increase storage utilization.

“Storage virtualization and thin provisioning technologies help our customers realize significant capacity and cost savings while also addressing critical data center energy issues,” says Mark Bramfitt, principal program manager for PG&E. “By providing financial incentives, we hope to increase industry adoption of these smart and efficient new storage technologies.”

PG&E will issue rebates to data centers based on the amount of energy savings they achieve through storage virtualization and thin provisioning. To qualify for the program, customers must apply for and be accepted before deploying the storage technology.

Bramfitt says that 3PAR is the first vendor to collaborate with PG&E to quantify energy savings and to successfully apply under the utility’s program guidelines.

However, the program is not vendor specific, meaning that customers can use other vendors of data storage virtualization/consolidation and thin provisioning technology than 3PAR technology to receive the rebates.
