(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — A month after Canadian web hosting provider PEER 1 Network Enterprises (www.peer1.com) announced its expansion into Europe, PEER 1 has expanded its reach into Europe, launching its first data center in the UK, and naming Dominic Monkhouse managing director of its new European headquarters.
An industry veteran, known for leading IT Labs’ (www.itlab.co.uk) growth as an IT service provider in the UK small and medium-sized business market and his work as UK managing director of managed services provider Rackspace (www.rackspace.com), Monkhouse’s new role as PEER 1 European managing director makes him responsible for sales, marketing and service, building upon PEER 1′s “FirstCall” customer support commitment.
According to PEER 1′s Monday announcement, the opening of a European headquarters and data center in Southampton, UK was necessary due to consistent European consumer demand.
“Strong demand, favorable exchange rates, falling real estate prices and a UK market growth rate of 25 percent make this an opportune time for PEER 1 to expand its presence in Europe,” PEER 1 president and chief executive officer Fabio Banducci said in a statement. “The office will support more than 500 UK and European-based customers, who currently utilize PEER 1′s North American hosting services, and expand quickly to help additional businesses manage their online presence.”
Launching its first data center in the UK, PEER 1 is strengthening its presence in Europe alongside existing London and Amsterdam network Points-of-Presence, and offering managed and dedicated hosting services to PEER 1 and ServerBeach customers through an initial provision of 100 secure racks.
Tier1 Research senior analyst Antonio Piraino said the UK market, which is normally responsible for around 15 percent of global managed hosting revenue, has seen growth rates above the 25 percent mark over the past year, and even higher for some providers, despite the economic downturn. “Companies offering data center services in the UK are fast becoming major hubs for customers as far afield as Eastern European and Middle East due to the region’s high level of expertise, language skills and connectivity,” Piraino said in a statement.
As with PEER 1′s existing global data centers, the UK location will operate on a Cisco core with Foundry (www.foundrynet.com) load balancing and Juniper (www.juniper.net) dedicated client firewalls. The data center will also deliver energy-efficient downflow, eco-friendly cold-aisle containment, UPS back-up and generator redundancy power. It also offers upstream IP transit direct to its London PoP, with redundant fiber connecting it to PEER 1′s global “SuperNetwork,” a highly scalable and available content delivery network.
