(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Global IT hosting provider PEER 1 Hosting (www.peer1.com) has officially opened its new, $40 million data center in Toronto, Canada’s most populous city.
According to PEER 1′s Tuesday announcement, the 40,000-square-foot flagship data center, its third in Toronto and 17th worldwide, is the company’s first to offer all three hosting solutions, colocation, managed hosting and dedicated hosting, under one roof. This gives small and medium-sized businesses the convenience to choose the right solution for their business from one facility linked to a managed network spanning 13,000 route miles of fiber.
“Today’s businesses operate in an always-on, always-connected world, and our new data center ensures our customers are part of this world,” PEER 1 Hosting president and chief executive officer Fabio Banducci said in a statement. “With the growing demand of information, it is important businesses have a hosting service they can trust and rely on to protect information.”
The WHIR followed the construction of this facility in a series of videos, showcasing some of the features contributing to its increased power densities, high reliability and robust security. The Toronto facility is the most efficient data center PEER 1 has built. Building it in four sections, with each section built as a separate Performance Optimized Data (POD) center, enabling customers to expand their data center capacity faster and more efficiently than ever before, while allowing PEER 1 Hosting to cost-effectively manage growth.
Each of the four PODs in the new data center has the capacity for approximately 270 cabinets, equivalent to roughly 7,500 servers. The first POD, built at a capital cost of $10 million USD, includes 7,500 square feet of data center space and an additional 8,000 square feet of office space, and inventory, network and storage areas to support the data center.
Customer information is also managed on PEER 1 Hosting’s own high-performance network, enabling stronger control, tighter security and greater performance for customers. The new data center is also the company’s most redundant facility, making it a great primary storage location or disaster recovery location for small and mid-sized businesses across Canada and around the world.
PEER 1 Hosting customer, Motto Design Studio will be hosting hundreds of websites and data in the first POD of the new data center. “Our customers’ websites are our business,” Motto Design Studio owner Randy Laporte stated. “We trust PEER 1 Hosting to provide us with both the 24/7 support we need to keep our business running, and the scalability we need in order to grow.”
The remaining three PODs, which total 22,500 square feet, will be dedicated to additional data center space and infrastructure to be built out in future phases based upon customer demand.
