Parallels Summit 2010 – Day 3 Session: Accelerating Cloud Services Through Data Center Innovations

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — As big as the Internet already is, Intel data center group high density computing general manager Jason Waxman said that it’s set for a huge explosion in growth. There will be more users, more devices, and more content.

“The cloud needs to change to move forward,” Waxman said. There are four main areas that need to be addressed:

Efficiceny: There needs to be an additional 45 Gigawatts over the next five years to power Internet services if efficiency is not increased.

Security/Legal: FBI seizes servers hosting hundreds of hosting customers to perform investigations, when they should be able to target specific instances.

Simplified: Network complexity needs to be reduced.

Open: Standards are needed for the market to grow across the platform.

One of the interesting ideas that Intel has come up with to address the new data needs is the “Micro Server,” a 4u chassis with 18 different nodes that provides a cost effective server for less demanding workloads.

He notes that Intel is “not just silicon,” but can be a technology partner that can help companies make their entire IT operations efficient and capable of meeting the massively growing demand.

If the underlying infrastucture is not efficient, then, he said, “you’re leaving money on the table.”
