Oracle Application Express Release 4.0 Streamlines Database-Centric Web App Development

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Further streamlining the development of database-centric Web applications, longtime business software and hardware systems provider Oracle (www.oracle.com) has introduced Oracle Application Express version 4.0, which is designed to reduce the time and complexity of building Web 2.0 applications and reports.

According to Oracle’s Wednesday announcement, Oracle Application Express Release 4.0 is available for download from the Oracle Technology Network (www.oracle.com/technetwork), and is included in all editions and releases of Oracle Database 11g at no additional cost.

Oracle Application Express lets developers rapidly build and deploy professional applications for Oracle Databases that are both fast and secure — using only a Web browser.

The latest release includes new Dynamic Actions, which let developers to declaratively incorporate dynamic client-side processes, without needing to have knowledge of JavaScript and AJAX to provide a robust Web 2.0 user experience. Plug-ins are also available for extending the development environment and incorporating custom components.

“Oracle Application Express is the primary custom development platform at General Healthcare Group,” GHG (www.generalhealthcare.co.uk) IT technology director Marc Yaneza said in a statement. “Its speed of delivery and ease of use has given GHG an excellent, cost effective, scalable platform to get the right tailored applications delivered when required. We’re really looking forward to Oracle Application Express 4.0 where Dynamic Actions and the new reporting capabilities will provide a much richer user experience. Plug-Ins will also help us to technically streamline the way that we create, deliver and re-use custom code, increasing productivity.”

Oracle Application Express 4.0 includes integration with RESTful Web services via a declarative interface. As well, Websheets, a Web-based integration of spreadsheets, provide a quick and simple way to integrate and share content and data on the Web. There are also improved themes, which provide a modern, XHTML and CSS standard-compliant, user interface.
