(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Open-source groupware provider Open-Xchange (www.open-xchange.com) has unveiled two new software extensions that let native Mac applications be used with Open-Xchange and the iPhone to access Open-Xchange groupware.
According to Open-Xchange’s Thursday announcement, OXtender for Mac OS X and OXtender for Mobile Web are available to all Open-Xchange users at no extra charge, making emails, appointments, contacts, tasks and documents available to end users through their Mac applications — Mail, iCal and Addressbook.
“The integration of Open-Xchange with native Mac applications means that users can access and edit all relevant information without changing their familiar desktop environment,” Open-Xchange chief executive officer Rafael Laguna said in a statement. “The addition of Macs and iPhones makes Open-Xchange groupware the ideal solution for organizations using various types of end user systems and devices.”
This makes Open-Xchange accessible from Macs, the web, PCs and smartphones. Even without a connection to the Internet, users can continue to work without interruption. When connected the next time, changes on the Open-Xchange Server are synchronized immediately.
OXtender for MacOS X lets end users access and edit all information and documents stored on the Open-Xchange server with desktop Mac applications familiar to them, and OXtender for Mobile Web lets all mobile devices connected to the Mac now have access to Open-Xchange data, including iPhones, iPods and other cell phones, as well as software from third-party ISVs that support iSync. Also, users of Apple’s MobileMe will receive new email, calendar and contact entries by the “over the air” push service to their iPhone.
