(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Ditlev Bredahl was looking for a solution that makes it easy for a Web host to setup, configure and manage a cloud hosting operation using off-the-shelf server and storage hardware.

This led him to create the OnApp (www.onapp.com) cloud management platform, which gives Web hosts simple Web-based control of clouds, virtual machines, storage and compute resources, users, billing and more.

Just eight weeks after its launch, it has been used to deploy more than 50 clouds and 35,000 virtual servers.

In developing this solution, Bredahl, OnApp chief executive officer and founder, had to challenge some of the major tenants of hosting, of which he was well-acquainted through his role as CEO of the UK2 Group of hosting companies.

One of the interesting ones is that cloud computing requires underselling. “This is a funny concept for many people at this conference, perhaps,” Bredahl said. He explained that unlike shared hosting, which may have 1,000 customers on infrastructure that can support 540, cloud services need overhead in case of bursts in resource use.

OnApp not only provides a turnkey cloud platform designed specifically for hosts, but – to this end – it also advises clients on cloud hosting business models. “If you’re used to shared hosting, and adapt that to cloud computing, you’re going to fail.”
