(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Promising collaboration and a consistent experience between PC desktops, smartphones and browsers, Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) has announced that its latest Office suite will let companies run a web-based version on their own servers, giving them more control of their information, alleviating some of the security concerns that keep enterprises from moving to the cloud.
According to an InformationWeek report, Microsoft Office 2010 will give all volume licensing customers the right to Web apps to run themselves on-premises. By letting them run Office on their own physical servers, this feature will likely make Office more appealing to corporations where data availability and accountability are critical.
With rival word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation tools, Google’s (www.google.com) cloud-based application suite currently does not offer an option for companies to run it from their own facilities. Instead, the applications must be run from Google’s own servers, raising concerns over the privacy and security of their information.
Akin to its email hosting market dominance with Exchange, a hosted version of Microsoft Office may be just what businesses are looking for.
