The project, “Optimizing Airflow Management Protocols in New York Data Centers,” will include participation from researchers at Binghamton University, Georgia Tech, Lawrence Berkley Labs and IBM. The project will focus on surveying, modeling, and then testing design improvements to an existing Manhattan data center. The results will be used to devise new design strategies that can be employed in other facilities in New York and around the world.

Bahgat Sammakia, interim vice president for research at Binghamton University, said in the report that achieving energy efficiency improvements in the range of 20-25 percent was a realistic objective. Georgia Tech researchers will work on modeling, IBM will mentor modeling and measurements and Lawrence Berkley Labs will work on benchmarking the Manhattan data center.
