December 2, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Internet research organization Netcraft (Netcraft.com) released the results of its November Web Server survey on Friday, indicating a net gain of about half a million sites this month.

The growth, says Netcraft, was the result of increases in the rest of the world outweighing the continuing fall in the United States. Since the start of the year, the proportion of Internet sites found by the survey in the US has fallen from 56 percent to 45 percent, primarily reflecting the reduction of sites parked at domain registration companies and the decline of advertising-funded mass hosting.

Netcraft says the announcement made in November by Cable & Wireless that it will close 23 of its 42 data centers is not significantly worse than the declining sizes of the company?s near competitors. Most well-known colocation companies, says Netcraft, including Exodus, Globix, Above.net, Level 3, Digex and PSINet, have seen declines of 20 percent or more in the number of IP addresses running Web servers in the region over the past year.

Most of the hosting companies successfully showing growth in IP addresses hosting Web sites have been smaller organizations, says Netcraft, including Rackshack, CrystalTech, Dialtone Internet, Hurricane Electric, Datapipe and Rackspace. Rackshack, in particular, has grown by approximately 160 percent since December 2001.
