(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Government officials of North Carolina and Iowa are competing for a $400 million data center build that could potential amount to a $1 billion in local investment over 20 years, according to a report by the Greensboro News-Record.
The name of the organization that will operate the data center has not yet been disclosed.
However, officials from North Carolina’s Guilford County and the city of Greensboro are currently looking at proposals that include local benefits for water, sewer and road improvements.
Guilford County and Des Moines, Iowa are the top contenders for the project, both of which offer state tax incentive programs including tax cuts on data center equipment purchases.
According to the Greensboro, North Carolina Economic Development Alliance’s website, the region has focused mostly on data centers that house financial services companies, including American Express, Citigroup, Lincoln Financial and Bank of America.
Currently, Iowa has several high-profile data centers either already built or in the works, including Google’s $600 million data center in Council Bluffs which opened last May.
