February 11, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Nortel Networks (nortelnetworks.com) today announced
r
availability of OPTera Packet Edge 100 Ethernet switch card for OPTera Metro
r
4000 Multiservice Platform, enabling Ethernet delivery over synchronous
r
digital hierarchy transport networks.
r
r
To address enterprise demand for extension of Ethernet traffic outside local
r
area networks, OPTera Packet Edge 100 aims to help service providers
r
maximize return on existing SDH infrastructure by increasing bandwidth
r
efficiency, and by reducing network complexity and operating costs, the
r
company said.
r
r
OPTera Packet Edge 100 enables service providers to transport enterprise
r
Ethernet traffic between sites by supporting high Quality of Service
r
Ethernet Private Line connectivity services, reducing the need for routers
r
on customer premises. The technology also offers enhanced attributes like
r
bandwidth tunability, which can create additional value for packet-oriented
r
multiservice offers.
r
r
“Our customers have a large installed base of SDH networks, and it is
r
crucial that we help them to realize their full value,” said Marco Pagani,
r
president, Metro Optical, Nortel Networks. “This Ethernet over SDH solution
r
creates a new service for our OPTera Metro 4000 platform, enabling service
r
providers to offer excellent service levels to enterprise customers, and to
r
provide greater granularity in the bandwidth they offer compared to TDM.”
r
r
“Additional benefits include our pioneering use of virtual concatenation,
r
which uses SDH bandwidth more efficiently, and the ability to provision
r
bandwidth to customers on demand,” Pagani added. “This is in addition to
r
offering new Ethernet based data services outside the LAN at a minimum
r
capital and operational cost per customer.”
r
r
OPTera Packet Edge 100 is part of Nortel Networks Metro Optical solutions
r
portfolio. It is a plug-in Ethernet switch card for OPTera Metro 4000 that
r
delivers integrated Layer 2 Ethernet connectivity services across arbitrary
r
topology, multi-vendor, multi-domain SDH-based global networks using VCX.
