Non-Profit CSC to Build Green Data Center in Finland

UPM's Renforsin Ranta business park in Kajaani, the site of the future CSC - IT Center for Science data center.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — CSC – IT Center for Science (www.csc.fi/english) announced on Tuesday is will build one of the world’s most ecologically-efficient data centers in the Renforsin Ranta (www.renforsinranta.fi) business park in Kajaani, on the site of the former paper mill of UPM (www.upm.com/en) in northern Finland.

The announcement comes a week after Google began construction on its paper mill turned data center in Hamina, Finland.

The data center will be built jointly by CSC and UPM, and it will house supercomputers, data storage, and other demanding IT systems.

Construction on the data center will begin this autumn and be completed in early 2012.

According to the press release, “several tens of people” will be hired during the construction phase.

In addition to being used by CSC, other companies are also expected to use the data center facilities.

“Our aim is to create one of the world’s most eco-efficient data centers, to be operated using locally produced energy and with a minimal carbon footprint,” says Kimmo Koski, managing director of CSC. “All the alternatives we have considered contain a binding offer on energy from the business park’s own network. This will bring significant cost benefits in electricity transfer costs.”

Energy for the data center will be provided by hydroelectric power plants in Kajaani, with cooling water stemming from the nearby river.

Founded by UPM in 2008, Renforsin Ranta is a business park that is located on the site of the company’s former paper mill.

The business park houses 25 companies that have more than 500 employees.

One of the strategic growth areas of Renforsin Ranta is measurement and information technology.

Administered by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, CSC is a non-profit company providing IT support and resources for academia, research institutes and companiesvironment that researchers can use via the Funet network.

CSC also receives data from CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, maintains academic library systems, and offers data storage services for the National Audiovisual Archive, KAVA for the digital archiving of all radio and television programs in Finland.

When compared to other markets around the world, Finland’s location and provisions are excellent for large and cost-effective IT data centers.

The country’s well-functioning data traffic, cool climate, industrial facilities, solid bedrock, and waterways make it an ideal region for building data centers with sustainable development.
