Non-Profit Central Houston Chooses The Planet's Storage Cloud

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — One of Houston’s premiere downtown business organizations has chosen IT hosting provider The Planet (www.theplanet.com) to protect its critical data.

Non-profit Central Houston (www.centralhouston.org) recently celebrated its 26th year serving the stakeholders of Houston’s central city as the steward of Houston’s vision for the redevelopment and revitalization of downtown. To continue its mission of supporting the growth and development of the city, according to The Planet’s Wednesday announcement, it is using the Planet Storage Cloud for data redundancy and backup.

“We focus on issues related to urban planning, economic development, transportation issues, public safety, governmental affairs, and cultural and entertainment programs,” Central Houston president Bob Eury said in a statement. “Our office provides a historical repository for downtown Houston, so safe data storage is critical. Just like other firms, we require off-site data storage. The Planet Storage Cloud provides redundancy and backup to protect our critical assets, and offers the peace of mind that we’re protected.”

Collaborating with a wide array of companies and government organizations for the cross-pollination of ideas and funding, Central Houston provides support and counsel to programs and projects working to develop concepts and solutions for the vibrant inner city. The organization boasts a membership roster of more than 100 companies located downtown including Chevron, Continental Airlines, Deloitte, ExxonMobil, JPMorgan Chase, KBR, Shell and Waste Management, legal firms, banks, major property owners, major league sports teams, and many others.

“Not long ago, downtown Houston was largely a vacated location after work,” said Eury. “There was little residential infrastructure and few hotels. In just a few short years, we’ve seen a remarkable resurgence, supported by new infrastructure projects, residential development and vast entertainment opportunities. Today, downtown Houston provides an enviable venue and destination for businesses and entertainment, drawing a broad population to the city’s central core.”

In November 2008, The Planet launched its highly scalable, on-demand cloud storage service, offering with geographically distributed service between its own D2 data center in Dallas and the Nirvanix Storage Delivery Network that spans five worldwide storage nodes across three continents. The Planet Storage Cloud currently offers network-attached-storage-like functionality accessible anywhere starting at 25 cents per GB, and less depending on volume.

“Central Houston sets the pace for downtown, serving as the hub for activities that impact virtually every operating core,” The Planet chairman and chief executive officer Douglas J. Erwin. “Storage Cloud provides the capacity required to retain critical data, which Central Houston recognizes. We encourage companies, whether they host their IT infrastructure with The Planet or elsewhere, to consider storage and backup as strategic components. We’ve heard far too many stories about businesses that were unable to recover after a devastating data loss.”
