Nominet Targets Registry Fraud

November 30, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Nominet (nominet.org.uk), the operator of the .uk registry, has succeeded in gaining High Court orders and injunctions against Ultra Technologies Ltd and its director Peter Francis-Macrae, according to a report by Net 4 Nowt.

According to the report, the injunctions prevent either Francis-Macrae or Ultra Technologies from causing any damage to Nominet’s computer systems, harassing Nominet’s staff, using the .uk WHOIS database or sending documents in the form of certain ?Domain Registry Services’ notices that circulated earlier this year.

r

The two defendants were reportedly also ordered to provide Nominet with a list of the names and addresses of users they may have sent such notices, and to cover the costs Nominet occurred in repairing any damage done by the notices.

r

Nominet alleges that Francis-Macrae and Ultra Technologies misused Nominet’s intellectual property rights through its WHOIS service, and falsely suggested an official relationship with Nominet by sending phony ?Domain Expiration Notices’ to .uk registrants under the name Domain Registry Services.

A date has not yet been set for a full hearing of the case.
