Nintendo Wii Selects Limelight CDN

September 4, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Content delivery network provider Limelight Networks (limelightnetworks.com) announced on Wednesday that it will be providing content delivery services for Nintendo’s Wii console (wii.nintendo.com).

According to Limelight Networks’ most recent announcement, Nintendo will be using the LimelightDELIVER service to deliver text and graphic content to the Wii News and Forecast Channels.

The company says Nintendo can expect rapid delivery of its online content because Limelight’s CDN is directly connected to over 900 broadband and last-mile providers worldwide.

“We are pleased to be enabling a great user experience for the highly successful Wii console, and to be working with such a respected global gaming brand as Nintendo,” says Shinji Tsukamoto, vice president of Limelight Networks. “Limelight Networks is now delivering content and providing services for all three major gaming platforms around the world.”

It seems Nintendo Wii is the latest gaming provider to jump on the Limelight bandwagon. In 2005, Microsoft announced a partnership with the CDN to deliver content for the Xbox Live online entertainment network, which supports Microsoft’s Xbox 360 video game system.

And in 2007, Limelight’s CDN technology was adopted by Sony Computer Entertainment to deliver system software updates to Playstation 3 and PSP users.

Among its partnerships with gaming providers, Limelight boasts a customer base of more than 1300 Internet, entertainment, software and technology brands including names like Amazon, Belo Interactive, Brightcove, DreamWorks, Facebook, FOXNews.com, Metacafe, MSNBC.com and MySpace.
