In addressing the new challenges of cloud networking, the Vyatta network OS provides a scalable, integrated, enterprise-class networking solution for advanced routing and network security functionality for hybrid environments.
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The emergence of cloud-based applications and services has created some very significant networking challenges, making LAN, WAN and management functionality all important factors in enabling cloud computing, according to a new report by Jim Metzler of consultancy Ashton Metzler & Associates (www.ashtonmetzler.com).
The “2010 Cloud Networking Report”, sponsored by open-source networking solutions provider Vyatta (www.vyatta.com), found that, as IT organizations continue their cloud computing adoption, they will have to adopt Cloud networking to support these solutions.
According to Metzler, a cloud network has many of the same basic goals as cloud computing. It is designed to support the characteristics of a cloud computing solution, does no harm to cloud computing solutions, and provides solutions that are “good enough”, meaning that on a going forward basis, it will enable IT organizations to continually provide the highest levels of availability and performance for a small number of key applications and services.
Metzler reports that the majority of IT organizations either recently have, or intend to redesign their data center LANs soon, mainly to reduce cost, while simultaneously enabling them to support an increasingly virtualized and dynamic data center.
One of the challenges, Metzler said, associated with hybrid cloud computing is that hybrid clouds depend heavily on virtual machine migration among geographically dispersed servers connected by a WAN, making the WAN necessary in order to ensure high availability and dynamic response to changes in user demand for services.
Finally, one of the primary characteristics of a cloud computing solution is virtualization, and the most commonly deployed form of virtualization is server virtualization. Unfortunately, server virtualization creates a number of management challenges including the breakdown of network design and management tools, limited VM-to-VM traffic visibility, poor management scalability, multiple hypervisors, and management on a per-VM basis.
In addressing the new challenges of cloud networking, the Vyatta network OS is one of the options administrators can use to provide a scalable, integrated, enterprise-class networking solution for advanced routing and network security functionality for hybrid environments.
