November 29, 2005 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — A broken piece of hardware in Network Solutions’s (networksolutions.com) domain name system caused an outage on Monday that brought down an estimated 120,000 Web sites, according to a report by vnunet.
A spokesperson for Network Solutions told vnunet that the outage lasted one hour and four minutes, ending at 12:44 p.m. Eastern on Monday.
The spokesperson said the hardware malfunction was in the system that handles domain name requests, not the actual DNS server.
The outage affected only domains hosted with Network Solutions.
Network Solutions is one of the largest domain registrars in the world.
