(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider Network Solutions (www.networksolutions.com) announced on Monday it has added hosting support for open source programming framework Ruby on Rails (www.rubyonrails.org) Application Manager (www.networksolutions.com/web-hosting/index.jsp).
Ruby on Rails is a development framework that enables users to create a range of application, including blogs, forums, online communities, e-commerce and other projects using less code and minimal configuration.
Installing RoR applications in most hosting environments can be a time-consuming and taxing process, as developers must have a firm understanding of UNIX to deploy a RoR application with most web hosting platforms.
Network Solutions decided to address this issue by simplifying and streamlining the integration process by providing a one click deployment framework, enabling developers to deploy applications faster than in the past.
“We heard from the developer community that it’s often difficult to integrate Ruby on Rails applications in hosting environments,” says Bill Jolly, director of hosting product management for Network Solutions. “Our hosting team saw this as an opportunity to differentiate the Network Solutions hosting platform from the competition by pre-configuring our servers and implementing a quick and easy way to install RoR applications.”
The announcement marks the latest move by Network Solutions to provide its hosting customers with integrated open source tools. In May, Network Solutions partnered with open source collaboration software provider Open-Xchange to deliver a hosted email service to small- and medium-sized businesses.
The company is also working towards appealing to a growing community of web developers by providing such tools. In September, Networks Solutions added Joomla, PHP Bulletin Board and OSCommerce to its open source library, as well as increased the bandwidth and storage capacity of its web hosting packages.
Network Solutions provides a range of services including web hosting, web design, e-commerce software, search engine marketing, SSL certificates, email services, and domain name registration.
In August, the company launched its new corporate website that illustrates the company’s philosophy, people and products in a comprehensive and personal way.
