October 8, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — German software company Netline Internet Service GmbH (netline-is.de) said this week that version 0.7.3 of its Open-Xchange email server, a competitor to Microsoft Exchange, recently went into beta testing.

The latest version of the company’s email server took significantly less time to develop than previous versions because of the company?s decision to open source the code, Frank Hoberg, CEO of Netline, said in the report.

Netline’s email server can be installed on six of the major Linux distributions: Debian, SuSE, Red Hat, Slackware, Mandrake and FreeBSD. It was previously only available on SuSE Linux.

Open-Xchange email server, which currently holds about one percent of the market, is being marketed under a new business model ? both a free and for sale version. The company, according to the report, said this is the only scalable way for it to compete against market leaders Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes.
