April 14, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web analytics firm Netcraft (netcraft.com) announced on Monday the results of its April 2008 survey. The monthly survey received responses from 165,719,150 sites.
The majority of April’s growth of 3.1 million sites stems from US-based websites, says Netcraft, with Google’s Blogger (blogger.com) service alone taking in 1.1 million sites.
lighttpd (lighttpd.net) developer share saw a slight decrease in the number of sites this month, but continues to hold a significant ranking in the survey with 1.5 million sites. The developer, which is open sourced under the revised BSD license, helps deliver some of the content for YouTube, Wikipedia and meebo.
Driven by its Blogger sites, Google’s developer share rose by 0.54 percent to 6.08 percent this month, while Apache fell by 0.27 percent and Microsoft by 0.14 percent.
Overall, Apache (apache.org) maintains its top position by gaining more sites than Google’s 1.07 million, while Microsoft gains 847,000 sites.
And despite Google’s Blogger operating a large number of sites, the company’s new App Engine service fails to have the same impact on the Netcraft survey.
The company has placed a limit of 10,000 accounts during its preview release phase, and each developer is limited to creating a maximum of three applications.
