Netcraft: Many Strong Sites Using FreeBSD

August 19, 2003 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Half of the top 10 Web hosting company Web sites with the fewest failed requests run on the FreeBSD platform, according to Netcraft?s (news.netcraft.com) July survey of Web hosting provider?s Web sites.

The monthly survey measures and ranks the hosting providers whose Web sites experienced the fewest failed requests and the fastest connection times.

Topping the list was uswest.net (uswest.net) with a .07 failed request percentage. Occupying positions 2- 6 with a .08 failed request percentage were Cable & Wireless, Hypermart.net, Peer Networks, olm.net and about.com.

Four sites – Cable and Wireless, Pair Networks, New York Internet and about.com – were in the Top 10 for both June and July.

The Netcraft survey results were taken from a sample size of 52 Web sites. The performance measurements were made at 15 minute intervals from four separate points around the Internet, and averages were calculated over the immediately preceding 24-hour period.
