December 23, 2003 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The number of sites hosted on Cobalt servers has declined since August 2002 when it served 3.1 million hostnames on 942,000 Web sites, according to research and analysis firm Netcraft (news.netcraft.com). According to Netcraft’s November hosting survey, Linux-Cobalt served only 871,000 hostnames on 527,000 Web sites.

Sun Microsystems announced on September 1 its intentions to phase out Cobalt, its line of Linux-based hosting appliances. Sun acquired Cobalt Networks in September 2000.

According to Netcraft, Sun has set an end-of-life date of Feb. 19 for its last remaining Cobalt product, the RaQ 550 server.

According to Netcraft’s research, the largest Cobalt hosts are Host Europe, Agarik/Amen and EV1Servers.

Netcraft research showed that the percentage of Linux active sites with known Linux distribution were RedHat (51.7 percent), Cobalt (19.6 percent) and Debian (15.4 percent).

Netcraft said it expects the discontinuation of Cobalt to prompt further shifts in market share among Linux vendors.
