(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — North Carolina’s Catawba County and the town of Maiden revealed Monday that they have agreed to give Apple (www.apple.com) $46 million in tax incentives over the next decade if the company builds a data center in the region.
On Monday, Apple met with representatives of the Catawba County Board of Commissioners and the county’s Economic Development Corporation.
Last week, the WHIR reported that Apple would likely invest $1 billion to build its east coast hub in Maiden.
Apple has already agreed to invest $1 billion in the data center, located about 30 miles northwest of Charlotte.
However, if the company agrees to invests another $1 billion into the data center, the county and town will give the company another $20.7 million in incentives over another 10-year period.
The data center will create at least 50 full time jobs to the community, which is currently at a 15 percent unemployment rate, as well as bring work for local security, janitorial and repair service companies.
In an attempt to lure the massive Apple investment, the North Carolina legislature changed its state’s corporate income tax law, giving the company a tax break of $46 million in the next decade.
