NaviSite to Renovate SJ Data Center Following Outage

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider NaviSite (www.navisite.com) says it will renovate the surge suppression system at its San Jose data center following last week’s power outage at the facility, according to a report by Data Center Knowledge.

The outage occurred January 19th after severe storms in the Northern California area cut off the facility’s utility power.

In an incident report to customers, NaviSite explained how the data center’s surge suppression system did not effectively shield relay fuses within an automated transfer switch from a power surge at the onset of the utility outage.

The damage to the relay fuses prevented the ATS from triggering the data center’s diesel backup generators, which caused the facility to resort to battery power from the UPS.

NaviSite issued this statement: “During this time, the UPS batteries were drained, and once the batteries were drained, power was lost to the data center floor at approximately 4:56 am PST. Power was restored to the data center by manually starting the generators and transferring load to the generators. Power was restored to the data center at 5:35 am PST.”

The Web host is now trying to take proactive action to resolve further issues by adding resiliency to its power infrastructure.

The company is hiring an electrician to re-architect its surge suppression environment, says Allen Allison, VP of managed services for NaviSite.

Allison also added that NaviSite regularly tests out the key parts of the facility’s power infrastructure.
