February 26, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Siemens Enterprise Networks LLC, (siemensenterprise.com) a
r

subsidiary of Siemens AG and a provider of converged voice and data
r

solutions, announced today that it has been awarded contracts totaling $7.1
r

million to upgrade the voice and data networks of the National Archives and
r

Records Administration (nara.gov).
r

r

The National Archives and Records Administration is an independent federal
r

agency that oversees the management of federal records including
r

presidential papers and the records related to the formation of the
r

government, such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and
r

the Bill of Rights. The National Archives operates 33 regional facilities in
r

18 states nationwide.
r

r

The implementation of Siemens HiPath convergence solution will enable the
r

National Archives to use a single nationwide communications system, saving
r

costs by combining its voice and data networks. All of the National
r

Archives’ 33 sites will be connected to form a unified private
r

communications network, using VoIP over the wide area network. This
r

converged network will provide a single system image with universal access
r

to centralized applications, including Siemens HiPath Xpressions unified
r

messaging product, a messaging system which offers a single point of entry
r

for all message types (e-mail, voice, and fax) and retrieval via telephone
r

or a PC e-mail client.
r

r

By implementing a converged solution, the National Archives gains increased
r

survivability at each of the networked nodes. Should the IP network fail,
r

each site can automatically route voice calls over the public switched
r

telephone network.
r

r

“This solution is particularly well-suited for enterprise customers such as
r

the government or large corporations that have branch offices distributed
r

across the U.S. or around the globe,” said Tom Welsh, vice president of
r

global accounts at Siemens Enterprise Networks. “By developing this
r

convergence path for the National Archives and Records Administration,
r

Siemens reinforces its goal of delivering practical convergence to its
r

customers, based on their specific needs and at their own pace,” he
r

continued.
