NASA's Deep Impact a Web Event

July 5, 2005 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Akamai Technologies (akamai.com) and eTouch Systems (etouch.net) delivered streamed footage of the Deep Impact spacecraft mission from the US National Aeoronautics and Space Administration Web portal (nasa.gov) over the July 4th holiday weekend, while Sonic Foundry (sonicfoundry.com) captured images of the event.The Deep Impact space mission began six months ago. A projectile from the spacecraft was launched directly at the Tempel 1 comet about 83 million miles away from earth while a flyby craft observed the impact from a distance. The impact created a massive crater, which scientists will use to learn about the elements hidden inside the comet. It is the first time humans have made contact with a comet. 

 

Akamai streamed the pre-impact briefing on July 1, a pre-impact update on July 3 and the actual impact, just before midnight on July 3. Etouch Systems provided the project with Web content management services. Sonic Foundry used its Mediasite media recording and publishing system to record the images, which were then published on its Web site.
