MySpace Site Suffers Downtime
July 24, 2006 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Online community Web site MySpace (myspace.com) went offline early Monday morning after experiencing a power outage in its data center, according to Web analytics and research firm Netcraft (netcraft.com).
The site remained inaccessible for more than 90 minutes, and then displayed a brief disclaimer alerting users to the problems: “Hey everyone! There’s been a power outage in our data center. we’re in the process of fixing it right now, so sit tight. – Tom” With MySpace unavailable, many of the service’s users turned to popular blogging service, LiveJournal, to post blog items.
The message at MySpace did not specify which of its data centers had experienced the power outage. The site appears to use two – one at CWIE.net in Tempe, Arizona and another in a new Equinix data center in El Segundo, California. MySpace is ranked the 77th most visited site on the Internet based on users of the Netcraft toolbar, while other services like Hitwise place it higher.
Last July, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. bought MySpace for $580 million. In May, MySpace announced the expansion into Equinix’s data center, which the company said would allow it to improve peering with network service providers, helping it to manage traffic surges and high-bandwidth features such as multimedia streaming.
Representatives from Equinix confirmed on Monday that the company’s data center facility was not involved in the outage.
“Equinix’s data centers were operating as normal over the weekend and this morning, providing consistent power to all customers,” says Margie Backaus, chief business officer of Equinix. “MySpace operates in Equinix data centers, but it also hosts operations in other data centers where we understand the incident occurred.”
