August 19, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider Rackspace Hosting’s (rackspace.com) cloud division Mosso (mosso.com) announced on Tuesday that it has appointed Bruce Runyan its chief uptime officer.
In this newly-created role, Runyan will be responsible for ensuring that Mosso continues to provide a reliable customer experience as the cloud scales, and creating an environment that enables Mosso to introduce new capabilities and capacity without impacting the experience.
Although the appointment of a new team member isn’t necessarily the most unique news, this particular announcement garners some special attention due to the presumably unprecedented role Runyan has been hired to look after.
According to an email to the WHIR, Mosso says confidence in the reliability of cloud computing is a critical issue, especially with some of the recent high-profile outages we’ve seen lately, like Amazon’s web services outage earlier this year and by having a chief uptime officer — a role the company believes every cloud provider should haveĀ – Mosso is ensuring that it is able to meet its 100 percent uptime service level agreement, 100 percent of the time.
Mosso says with a background spanning leadership positions in the high technology sector as well as extensive technical consulting, Runyan brings 20 years of broad management, operations and customer service expertise to this newly created position at the company.
“I’ve been helping companies improve their operations, effectiveness, and customer experience for decades, and I’m excited at the opportunity to bring my expertise and focus to the unique challenges now facing emerging cloud environments,” says Runyan. “Rackspace and Mosso are well known for their extremely rigorous SLA’s, and industry-leading Fanatical Support. My job is to integrate these capabilities, and then take them to the next level, by providing bulletproof reliability, consistency and scalability so that our customers can have complete confidence and trust in the cloud.”
Prior to Mosso, Runyan served as VP of operations and customer care at open source solutions provider Fonality. While at Fonality, Runyan scaled service and manufacturing capacity while simultaneously reducing operating costs. Runyan has also held positions as the director of global IT solutions at Autodesk and president and chief operating officer at TelePost.
In June, Mosso announced it has added a new Mosso control panel and new provisioning system for its flagship product, The Hosting Cloud, increasing cloud service capabilities and scalability.
