(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Virtualization technology provider VMware (www.vmware.com) concluded its sixth annual VMworld conference, held from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, reporting a strong turnout of more than 12,500 customers, partners, press and analysts.
VMware said that the number of participants signaled the continued significance of virtualization to the IT industry. According to VMware, there were more than 200 sponsors and exhibitors including Platinum sponsors Cisco, Dell, EMC, HP, IBM, Intel, NetApp, Symantec and Wyse.
“At a time when many events have seen extreme drops in attendance, we are very pleased at the success we’ve seen this year at VMworld,” VMware corporate marketing senior director Claire Darling said in a statement. “We’re excited that VMworld remains a priority for customers, partners and prospects, as VMware and virtualization continue to be at the forefront of innovation that helps drive their businesses through IT.”
Underscoring the conference theme, “Hello Freedom,” VMworld 2009 featured more than 300 presentations and breakout sessions focusing on the liberating and transformative effects of virtualization on nearly every aspect of datacenter, desktop and cloud computing.
VMware president and chief executive officer Paul Maritz, in the opening keynote, remarked on the importance of reducing data center management complexities and highlighted VMware’s continued investments in cloud computing. On Wednesday, VMware chief technology officer and R&D senior vice president Stephen Herrod discussed the innovations VMware continues to drive in virtualizing desktops and mobile devices.
More information and replays of general session keynotes is available on VMware’s website (www.vmworld.com/community/conferences/2009/).
There were also a number of high-profile announcements made at VMworld. At the event’s onset, VMware unveiled its new vCenter product family, a set of policy-based, service-driven management solutions that provide improved business agility, as well as a beta version of VMware Go, a web-based service that makes it easier for first time customers to get started with virtualization.
VMware vCenter builds on the innate capabilities of VMware’s vSphere 4 virtualization platform, offering simplified management and lower operating costs, as well as more dynamic and flexible IT services, enabling corporate IT departments to operate more efficiently as an internal service provider, according to VMware’s Monday announcement.
VMware and partners announced new joint solutions and initiatives, including a new integrated solution with Hewlett-Packard (www.hp.com) called “HP Insight Control for VMware vCenter Server,” which helps customers simplify the management of mixed physical and virtual datacenters.
VMworld will return to the Moscone Center August 30 to September 2, 2010. The event is crossing the Atlantic later in 2010 as VMworld Europe rolls into Copenhagen, Denmark, October 12-14.
