Mobi Domain Landrush Begins September 26, 2006 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The registry operator for the new .mobi top-level domain DotMobi (pc.mtld.mobi) announced on Tuesday that the .mobi domain would be available for purchase to the general public beginning at 3:00 p.m. GMT Tuesday. DotMobi says that individuals and small businesses can purchase their .mobi domains from any of the 77 main domain registrars worldwide that have signed up to offer the extension. DotMobi says the domains are more expensive than some others, selling at about $38 per year compared to an average of about $19 for a .com, because extra money is being put into monitoring the domains to make sure they conform to agreed mobile standards. DotMobi CEO Neil Edwards says the .mobi domain will be exclusively for use with pages designed specifically for mobile phones and other mobile devices, rather than relying on cut-down versions of normal Web sites, and so will revolutionize the use of the Internet on mobile devices. The company, he says, will be firm with anyone that doesn’t follow the guidelines drawn up for the new domain extension and it will suspend any site that doesn’t comply. In May 2006, DotMobi, backed by a number of investors including Ericsson, Google, Microsoft, Nokia and Vodafone, launched .mobi, the first TLD dedicated to delivering the Internet to mobile devices. Although certain .coms and other top-level domains can be accessed through mobile devices, .mobi is designed to guide mobile users to specially formatted made-for-mobile Internet content and services.
