(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — In a partnership with e-commerce software and services provider Miva Merchant (www.mivamerchant.com), WebNet Hosting (www.webnethosting.net) can now provide all online merchants with exactly what they need in order to be fully compliant with the Payment Card Industry and Payment Applications data security standards.
According to its Friday announcement, WebNet Hosting’s e-commerce plans offer businesses a thoroughly secure shopping cart that is importantly PA-DSS compliant. As of July 2010, all e-commerce sites must be compliant with the PCI PA-DSS in order to avoid being shutdown or penalized with expensive fines ranging from $5,000 to as much as $100,000 per month.
With the goal of being the definitive data standard for software vendors that develop payment applications, PA-DSS was created by credit card company VISA (www.visa.com) to prevent third parties payment applications from storing prohibited secure data including magnetic stripe, CVV2, or PIN information. The standard also dictates that software vendors develop PCI-compliant payment applications.
The importance of PCI compliance was underscored by a security survey released Friday by application data security provider Imperva (www.imperva.com), which found that 71 percent of surveyed companies do not treat data security as a strategic initiative, yet 79 percent have experienced a breach.
Also, 55 percent do not secure Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and bank account details. And finally that consumers are more at risk doing business with smaller companies due to the fact that only 28 percent of smaller companies comply with the PCI DSS as opposed to 70 percent of larger companies.
WebNet Hosting’s Miva Merchant e-commerce plans start at $24.95 per month offering support for up to 100 products, as well as 500MB of disc space, 5,000MB of bandwidth, and a 99.98 percent uptime guarantee. Its high-end “E-Semi-Dedicated” package has no limit on the number of products supported and includes 7,500MB of disk space, 150,000MB of bandwidth and 100 percent uptime guarantee.
